Join us for a six-week introduction to the fundamentals of handbuilding with clay. This course is designed for beginners and anyone looking to strengthen their foundation in ceramic making through a combination of technique, experimentation, and creative practice.

Each week, we’ll explore a different handbuilding technique and create a project that allows you to practice it firsthand. You’ll learn how to work confidently with clay, build strong and intentional forms, refine surfaces, and bring your own ideas into the process.

Over the six weeks, we’ll cover foundational techniques including pinching, coiling, slab building, joining, texturing, shaping, and surface finishing, while learning how to think through form from beginning to end.

No previous pottery experience is required. Come ready to get your hands dirty, experiment, and discover what you can make with a simple piece of clay.

What you’ll learn:

  • Fundamental hand-building techniques
  • How to properly prepare and work with clay
  • Building structurally sound forms
  • Joining and attaching clay securely
  • Creating texture and surface detail
  • Refining and finishing your pieces
  • Basic glazing and surface decoration
  • How to develop your own ideas through the making process

By the end of the course, you’ll have a collection of handmade pieces and a strong foundation in hand-building techniques that you can continue exploring on your own.

About the Instructor

Hannah Martin

Hannah Martin

Ceramic Artist and Instructor

Rooted in a love for organic form and quiet beauty, Hannah is a ceramic artist based in Grass Valley, California. Her work is deeply inspired by the shifting colors of the sea, the grounding presence of the natural world, and the subtle, soulful essence of humanity. Drawn to earthy textures and raw surfaces, she often leaves the exterior of her pieces unglazed, allowing the natural beauty of the clay to shine through. Her forms are both functional and expressive—meant to be held, used, and loved.

She’s been working with clay for over a decade, finding joy in the slow, tactile rhythm of the ceramic making process. When she’s not in the studio, you’ll likely find her in the garden, relaxing with her partner and their little feline tribe, or simply soaking up the quiet inspiration of the world around her.
