Silk Making: The Sacred Art of Sericulture
Date: Sunday, April 5, 2026
Time: 1-5pm
Cost: $100
Location: 205C York Street, Nevada City, CA 95959
Workshop Description:
Explore the ancient origins of sericulture and the remarkable relationship between humans and the silk moth. In this class, we’ll trace the history of sericulture from its beginnings in the East, uncovering how this extraordinary insect became central to one of the world’s most treasured fibers.
Students will have the opportunity to observe live silkworms and cocoons and learn about the full lifecycle of the silk moth. We’ll walk through the silk extraction process and discuss traditional and contemporary practices used to transform cocoons into usable fiber.
Each participant will leave with hand-dyed cocoons and the foundational knowledge needed to begin a small silkworm setup at home.

About the Instructor
Summer Lilly
Fiddler and Fiber Artist
My name is Summer Lilley, and I’m a fiddler and fiber artist based in the Southeast. While I work as both a teacher and musician, fiber arts remain my daily passion and creative grounding.
I grew up on a small farm where we raised sheep and mohair goats, and I learned to process their fiber by hand. I started spinning at age four—standing on a chair and using a homemade CD drop spindle—and I’ve been hooked ever since.
I love sharing the ancient craft of hand spinning, both on the wheel and spindle, and connecting others to this timeless tradition.
