Workshop Description:
In this two-day workshop, you will learn how to make a sterling silver stone pendant from scratch.
On day one, we will be cutting and polishing stones to make our own cabochons. Cabochon, pronounced cab-uh-shon, is defined as a gemstone that has been shaped and polished rather than faceted. Cabochon gemstones generally have a smooth, domed top surface and a flat base. We will demonstrate and guide you through the entire process of using trim saws, grinding wheels and cabbing machines to transform a slab or uncut stone into a finished cabochon that's ready to be set into metal.
Choose from one of our many stones or bring your own. If you have your own stone that you want to try to cut, bring it along. Every stone is different, and it’s not guaranteed that your stone will work out, but we will guide you through the process of figuring it out.
On day two we will be fabricating your own sterling silver and fine silver bezel-set stone pendant necklace. We will demonstrate and walk you through each step of the process of transforming silver sheet, wire and the cabochon you made on day one, into a wearable piece of art. At the end of the day, you'll leave with a one of a kind necklace, made with your own two hands.
Considerations:
• We will provide protective aprons and masks, but please wear clothing that can take a beating, as we will be working with some harsh chemicals and open flames.
• Please bring whatever snacks, drinks and other provisions you need to get through the day, as you will be processing lots of new information and we want your mind and body to be well-fueled.
• We will be working with some teeny-tiny details, so if you wear glasses, please bring them so you can see!

About the Instructor

Leora Coronel
Jeweler
I’ve been a jeweler for much of my adult life, and although it started with me gluing chunks of materials together (shout out to the first feather earring wave in 2005 lol), I felt a deeper pull to the craft of adornment. Following the creative call, I started exploring metalwork and lapidary work, slowly building my skills and experience over the years so that I could more artfully create the visions that I had in my mind. In 2010 I launched Gather Jewelry, which became a solid brand and business in my local community and online. In 2022, I retired Gather and I am continuing to make my hand-forged metal & stone jewelry under my own name. I live in the Sierra Nevada Foothills of Northern California and it is from this place that I find my inspiration—as well as some of my materials—like locally sourced minerals from the Yuba River. My designs are informed by a lifetime of fascination with ancient battle gear and weaponry, as well as all the stark magic found in the earth and all its kingdoms.
