Workshop description:
Spend an evening learning the fundamentals of shaping metal as you transform flat brass, copper, and silver plated brass into a beautifully formed leaf. Using traditional metalsmithing techniques, you’ll saw, hammer, texture, and form your piece, watching it take shape with every step.
We’ll cover the essentials of working with metal including annealing, shaping, and finishing, giving you a solid introduction to metalwork in a relaxed, hands-on environment. Each piece will be completely your own, whether you lean toward a simple, functional form or something more sculptural and expressive.
You’ll leave with finished metal leaves and a deeper understanding of how metal moves, plus skills you can build on in future metals classes.
No experience needed.

About the Instructor
Al Martinez
Multi-Disciplinary Craft Instructor
Al Martinez brings decades of hands-on making experience across a wide range of materials and disciplines. After spending 28 years in Australia, he began his career as a puppet and prop maker for a small company he co-founded with friends, where his background in woodworking played a key role in shaping imaginative sets and objects. He went on to spend 10 years crafting wooden boxes at a craft center, deepening his knowledge of materials and techniques across mediums. Alongside his studio practice, Al has taught extensively, sharing his skills in both institutional and independent settings. His teaching experience includes serving as a guest lecturer in the Leatherwork Department at the Canberra School of Art and teaching Puppet Making at Melbourne University. Since returning to Grass Valley, he has continued to teach a wide range of classes including bookbinding, papermaking, jewelry making, metal forming, and blacksmithing.
