Workshop Description:

A cabochon, pronounced cab-uh-shon, is defined as a gemstone that has been shaped and polished rather than faceted. The term comes from the French word “caboche,” which means head or noggin. Cabochon gemstones generally have a smooth, domed top surface and a flat base.

Learn how to cut, shape and polish your own cabochons with us! We will demonstrate and guide you through the entire process of using trim saws, grinding wheels and cabbing machines to transform a slab or uncut stone into a finished cabochon that's ready to be set into a finished piece of jewelry. You will leave with at least one of your own hand-cut cabochons.

To complete your experience, consider signing up for one of our Fabricate a Stone Ring Workshop on Sunday March 9th to set your cabochon into a sterling silver ring, made entirely with your own two hands.

Considerations:
  • We will provide protective aprons, but please wear clothing that can take a beating, cause stone-cutting can get a bit messy.
  • Please bring whatever snacks, drinks and other provisions you need to get through the day.
  • We will be working with some teeny-tiny details, so if you wear glasses, please bring them so you can see!

Jeweler

I’ve been a jeweler for much of my adult life, and although it started with me gluing chunks of materials together (shout out to the first feather earring wave in 2005 lol), I felt a deeper pull to the craft of adornment. Following the creative call, I started exploring metalwork and lapidary work, slowly building my skills and experience over the years so that I could more artfully create the visions that I had in my mind. In 2010 I launched Gather Jewelry, which became a solid brand and business in my local community and online. In 2022, I retired Gather and I am continuing to make my hand-forged metal & stone jewelry under my own name. I live in the Sierra Nevada Foothills of Northern California and it is from this place that I find my inspiration—as well as some of my materials—like locally sourced minerals from the Yuba River. My designs are informed by a lifetime of fascination with ancient battle gear and weaponry, as well as all the stark magic found in the earth and all its kingdoms.
