In this workshop, you’ll learn bundle dyeing and botanical dye techniques, using flowers and natural dye materials like cutch, logwood, marigold, and madder.
Each participant will dye a small collection of pieces, including a dress and top from Field Day & Friends, a Nevada City–based brand, with garments sewn in Oakland from a linen blend. You’ll also dye a tote, organic cotton yarn, and a tea towel. Gillian will walk through the full process, from preparing your materials to arranging your botanicals and steaming your bundles to reveal layered, organic patterns and color.
This is a hands-on, experimental practice that blends intention with unpredictability. No two pieces come out the same. You’ll leave with a set of one-of-a-kind naturally dyed textiles and a deeper understanding of how color can be created from the natural world.

GILLIAN KUHLMANN
I’m Gillian, an artist moving between clay and natural dye. I approach creating as an open ended conversation between materials showing off new discoveries, following and embracing mistakes which often lead to what comes next, and the ultimate never ending practice of trusting my intuition.
It began as a playful project when my usual ways of creating felt out of reach. I started with what I had, a desire for more flowers in my life and a garden full of hopi sunflower seeds. The experiment began, the plants led the way and my curiosity just grew stronger.
At the heart of it all is my love of sharing, slowing down, exchanging ideas, and simply making things together. <3

Field Day and Friends
