Branch Weaving
Workshop Description:
Kaci will teach a lesson on how to turn an ordinary branch into a loom for tapestry weaving. No prior weaving experience required. She will lead us on the basic steps of setting up the warp, starting your weaving, how to transition from one color to another, as well as finishing techniques. Everything you need to know to complete the project on your own, and keep making more. Warning: you may become addicted to branch weaving!
BYOB (Bring your own branch). Note from Kaci: I do feel that it's an integral part of the process is to get into nature and find a special branch. I will also have backup branches in case anyone brings something that will be too difficult to work with for their first attempt.
About the Instructor:
Kaci Smith is a multi-disciplinary artist specializing in two dimensional mixed media with a distinct emphasis on collage, and weaving. Born and raised in a small town in central New Jersey, Kaci has been a resident of California’s vibrant Bay Area since 1996. She holds a BFA in Textile Design from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, where she was the valedictorian of her class (1995), and the recipient of the prestigious Rohm and Haas Fine Art Achievement Award.
Kaci has worked professionally as a hand-weaver of rugs and upholstery fabrics. Additionally, she dedicated over a decade to starting and running a non-profit organization focused on Urban Forestry in her city of Richmond, California. In 2019, Kaci turned her focus to her art practice and it has gained momentum in the years since. Kaci’s paintings, weavings and collage pieces all begin intuitively and draw inspiration from her lifelong fascination with pattern, the interplay of colors, and global textiles. She enjoys switching back and forth between her mediums and finds the messiness and spontaneity of painting a necessary contrast to the technical and painstaking process of weaving.
